Tameion Krupton: Secret Storehouse

-Tameion (Koine Greek Strongs 5009)

A chamber on the ground-floor or interior of a Western Oriental house, generally used for storage or privacy, a spot for retirement — secret chamber, closet, storehouse.

-Krupton ( or Kruptos, Koine Greek Strongs 2927)

Hidden, concealed or secret.

-Tameion Krupton

The phrase refers to the combination of the Greek words for “inner chamber” and “hidden.” Together, they form tameion krupton (ταμεῖον κρυπτόν), which describes a secure, secluded private room

The phrase is most famously found in Matthew 6:6 (NIV: “go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen”).

Here, Jesus contrasts public religious displays with intimate, private prayer in your “inner room” (τὸ ταμεῖον) in “secret” (ἐν τῷ κρυπτῷ)

Matthew 6:5-8

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.

But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.

Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

TAKE-AWAY:

To pronounce the Koine Greek phrase Τameion Kruptos (often rendered as tameîon kryptós, meaning “hidden chamber” or “secret place”), say tuh-MAY-awn kroop-TOSS.
