The Disciple’s Prayer

THE DISCIPLES PRAYER Matthew 6:9-13

JESUS would have delivered/spoken Matthew Ch 5-7 in Aramaic, which the Gospel writers used Koine Greek [the ‘trade language’ of the day]
The version we are looking at was translated into American English.

MAIN

Proverbs 25:2 “It is the glory of GOD to conceal a matter; it is the glory of kings to reveal it.”
God hides things FOR us to find, not FROM us.

Matthew 11:25-26, “At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.”

The Disciple’s Prayer is loaded with layers of mysteries and secrets of the Kingdom to be revealed…
…IF you set out on the Journey to look!
[Didache: 3 times a day]

I. “Our Father in heaven,”
anchors our identity and connection


Pater       ‘Father’ in Greek, but with huge subtleties
        Not the child-affectionate Aramaic ‘Abba’ [used on Calvary, Mk 
        144:46, mentioned in Romans 8:   ] BUT clearly our DAD, HEAD 
        OF OUR FAMILY, PROVEN HIS WORTH IN ACTIONS AND 
        KINDNESS, 
        AUTHORITY, but with WARMTH, LOVE AND APPRECIATION
        - does not hint to Greek ‘Austerios’, meaning harsh and controlling 
        [Ephesians 6:4 and Colossians 3:21
in Heaven
        The Father is the Seat of the Kingdom of Heaven/Kingdom of God
        ‘Throne’ speaks of the centrality of the sovereign Power of God 
            Scripture >47 times, up to 60 based on inference and variants   

[KOINE GREEK] Pater hēmōn ho en tois ouranois (“Our Father, the one in the heavens)
hēmōn ‘Our’ as inside a family, denoted connection to Him and each other
not some general communal term

NO confusion: You are God and King, and we are not

The Kingdom of Heaven is NOT a democracy

TWO things the enemy attacks on: [] Identity and [] What GOD has said

II. “hallowed be Your name,”
I AM is over us

KOINE GREEK: (hagiasthētō), “Your Name stands as holy, set apart,
worthy of reverence”
NOT ‘we make it holy or reverent
active imperative command

‘HIS NAME’ IS FATHER… BUT ALSO connected directly to …
Jesus and HolySpirit

The Tetragrammaton… the HaShem (‘the NAME’, to avoid saying God’s Holy Name)
‘I AM”
YHWH (Yod), ה (He), ו (Vav/Waw), and ה (He), usually read from right to left as YHWH (יהוה).
Jesus IDENTIFIED with the Tetragrammaton in the Gospels, adding clarification to Divine Characteristics to His self-Identification as ‘I AM’ of Exodus 3:14

Power in His Name: Philippians 2:9-11 “at the Name of Jesus, every knee WILL [or SHOULD] bow…”
In our praying we INVOKE ‘The Name’

III. “Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven”
HIS mission
His mission, His intention, His plan, His desire…
His Will becomes
Our mission, our intention, our plans, our desires

Koine Greek is actually active declarative:
“Kingdom of God: Come!
Will of God; be done!
As it is Heaven – on earth!”

Complete invasion by the Kingdom of Heaven onto Earth is God’s Plan… subversive, revolutionary, real-time
Everything about the realities and culture of Heaven are to come to Earth
Everything of the kingdom of darkness will be totally crushed locked in the place of torment.

NOT religion, NOT Church-y ways, NOT fallen or sinful culture, not polite and cute
NOT subject to human interpretation, negotiation, or Church-board decisions

JESUS initiated the full-frontal INVASION at His baptism [the Heavens were violently torn open, the OPEN HEAVEN remains, and will consume the Earth at the End of Time… Mark 1:9-13, Revelations 21:1-5
This world, and EVERYTHING about it WILL be aligned with The Kingdom of God … and what doesn’t fit will be thrown in the fire pit!

WHEN WE PRAY this line of The Disciple’s Prayer, we are giving our allegiance to His Invasion and signing up for His take-over.
THIS is our Declaration, our Pledge, our Vow
TO THIS we give our all!

I PRAY every day, hand-over-heart, praying and declaring that HIS KINGDOM fills my heart, my mind, my life, and my ALL.

IV. “Give us today our daily bread.”
Provision of all our needs.

“Give us today the bread of tomorrow”

Translating this has many Scholars ‘not sure’,
unless you run it thru the lens of Prophetic language and Prophetic imagery.
Provision
YES, this is both a request and a declaration of UNQUESTIONABLE PROVISION.
The Disciple’s Prayer , like all Scripture lives in the context of the Pre-text and the Post-text, so Matthew Ch 5-6-7.
BEING TAKEN CARE OF BY FATHER GOD IS FULLY PROMISED!!
Unshakable confidence in HIS Care means a number of things:
-total assurance in that posture of God: SHIFT in focus, no
worries, no hoarding
-living without gripped by FEAR of lack ‘spirit of poverty’
-living as a King’s Kid with a Father Able to MINISTER out
who has ENDLESS SUPPLY of ABUNDANCE
-Tithe becomes a declaration of trust my wallet reflects my
heart
Miraculous Resources
“the Bread of Tomorrow” is prophetic
it’s a declaration that GOD has done it before, HE has unlimited resources, and HE wants us to ‘pull on Heaven’s storehouse’ and bring into the NOW that which is promised in the future.

MARY and the Miracle at the Wedding Feast of Cana [John 2:1-11]
She was not manipulating Jesus or ‘making Him do her bidding’
She KNEW who He was, and had deep knowledge of God’s plan
She knew what ‘Your Kingdom come” means… and her part in it
She knew that ‘the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of Prophesy’
[Rev 19:10]
She was SHOWING us how co-labouring with God works

Many other Biblical examples of ‘pulling in the Bread of Tomorrow’
[David and the worship with the Ark in the Tent,
Nehemiah, Daniel, Elijah, Gideon, Moses…]
Matthew 15, the deliverance of the daughter of Sero-Phonecian woman

V. “And forgive us our debts/sins, as we also have forgiven our debtors/those who sin against us.”
Free! Clean! Washed! Room to receive!

Un-escapable language… sorry! THIS is non-negotiable

In counseling, THE number one spiritual/psychological ailment found IS
UNFORGIVEN PEOPLE tied to UNFORGIVENESS
Many cultures elevate UN-FORGIVENESS into a twisted virtue.
Revenge is elevated into a familial demand.
Shakespeare uses it as his go-to drama arc.

“Well… he did that to me…” “Well, she did this to me…”
Here, Jesus is saying… bluntly… “SO? Forgive! 70 times 7 each day! Even if it’s continual… FORGIVE!”

JESUS modeled it to us on the Cross, the worst betrayal, injustice and full-force murder… ‘Father [Abba-close, intimate], forgive them!” Luke 23:24

JESUS ties forgiveness and un-forgiveness to OUR hearts and
our level of GRATITUDE and THANKFULNESS TO GOD
Forgiveness frees us from the past and what people have done to us.
Forgiveness releases the Kingdom of Heaven into the life of the broken person who sinned against you [or I]
Forgiveness is HARD WORK, and breaks a pattern of evil and darkness.

Scripture gives us the ‘why’ behind GOD’s declaration of ‘proportionality’
Bitterness, grudges, not rendering forgiveness…
DEFILES US [Heb 12:15]
Un-forgiveness BLOCKS GRACE
OCCUPIES OUR HEARTS AND MINDS
BURNS OUR AFFECTIONS AND FOCUS MEANT
FOR HIM
LEAVES US WOUNDED AND EXHAUSTED

This is the lynch-pin of MANY heart-issues…
A few years back, starting moving in:
JESUS, in Mark 11:25, commands ME…
“And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone,
forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”
EVERY TIME I start to pray, I FIND someONE I need to forgive right then.



Forgiveness allows the GREAT EXCHANGE to occur
I render forgiveness
I pray blessing and increase of Grace and Salvation on the one who hurt me
I get to leave that burden at the Feet of Jesus
HE fills that spot with HIMSELF, His Manna, His provision
Unburdened and grateful, I get to flow into Revelation
Filled with Grace and Health, I get to minister in His Supernatural Kingdom

Forgiveness restores COMMUNITY
-restores relationships
-builds a BRIDGE in MY HEART for the person who I forgave
-allows GOD to pour into me HIS perspectives for the person I forgave
Jeremiah 29:11-14 For I know the plans I have for you,”
declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you,
plans to give you hope and a future.”
“The House of God is built with the mortar of forgiveness” [quote source unknown]

VI. “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil”
Safe and Secure
protected in the war by The Champion of Heaven… dependent

(puzzling verse, tough to translate… Scripture in New Testament gives context)

James 1:13 KEY: “When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone”

LEAD… more like being ‘given over to’
Jesus, don’t let me go!!

TEMPTATION…
Koine Greek pierasmous TRIAL, TESTING, ADVERSITY, PROVING TESTING OF CHARACTER

The LORD is constantly testing us…
NEVER a pass/fail
NEVER setting us to fail
The LORD will always lead us into a BATTLE that HE has set us up for…
HIS Grace and Equipping would be sufficient for a victory

ALWAYS testing us for Capacity and Readiness
Capacity for Glory
Readiness for what HIS Destiny for us

The LORD will never pour out on us what HE knows will destroy us

[much of what people call ‘un-answered prayer’ is GOD saving them from something destructive]

Jesus endured such a ‘capacity/readiness’ moment – showed us the way
Luke 3:21-22, 4:1-13

Matthew 26: 41 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

<> The AFTERMATH from THIS POINT in the Story is the Disciples give in to FEAR, UNBELIEF and GRIEF… until the Risen Christ fully reveals Himself to them! see John 20:19-20 and Matthew 28:16-17. It wasn’t just Peter…

PRAYING is remedy for falling into fear, unbelief, grief… ‘Watch and Pray!’
1 Corinthians 10:13 ‘… a way out…’

In the HEAT of a battle, CRY OUT “Jesus! Help!” Desert Fathers called this the ‘Arrow Prayer’

EVIL/ EVIL ONE KOINE GREEK: ponéros

pain, useless toil, anguish, torment,
sickness, suffering, poverty
wickedness, lewdness, malicious things, crimes
physical, actual, emotional, mental…

Also, the result of our own STRIVING
Also, CAN refer to the devil/evil one in a personification (SO, translations that say evil one ARE within bounds)

DELIVER US! Hosanna!

SOZO: God’s saving answer to ponéros
Luke 17:11-19 10 lepers healed of disease, ONE fully SOZO’d
Mark 5:15 clothed in right mind
(sóphroneó – Linked to ‘returning to a right/sound mind’)
Koine Greek FOR saved, rescued, healed, delivered, made whole…
spirit, soul, mind, body, emotions

NOT JUST salvation by Faith through the finished work of the Cross of Christ

VII. “For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen”
Eternally … not mine but Thine…

KINGDOM
‘King’s Dominion’
Full Authority [exousia], full Sovereignty
The Kingdom of Heaven invasion is a re-claiming
ALL of what was lost in the FALL

POWER
-DIVINE power is Supreme, creative and transformative
-kingdom of darkness power is perversion of created, limited, subordinate to
permission, and destined to be terminated and destroyed
-NOT yang-yang or dualistic
-Difference between Power [dunamis] and Authority [exousia]

GLORY
-the essence of the Presence and full Character of GOD
-Ref: Exodus Ch 32-34
-GLORY (doxa) in NT îs radiant Majesty, Character and Presence of God
Jesus was the full manifestation and radiance of God’s Glory

Capacity and Readiness
2 Peter 1:4 in Christ, we become partakers of His Divine nature
Exodus 33-34, Moses asked ‘show me Your Glory’, was only allowed to experience a portion – MERCY of God so Moses wasn’t destroyed
