Adoration and worship leads us to the place of directly experiencing the Really Real of God.
Adoration will bring us into the Presence of God. As well, individually and corporately, adoration of God edges us into the realm of God’s Ultimate Reality. It lets us dip our toes into the ultimate object of God’s plan (Telos) in our here and now. Adoration aligns us with the trajectory of all history, even though that Telos distinctly stands in our future time-line.
In the last chapter of CS Lewis’ The Last Battle entitled ‘Farewell to Shadowlands’, the narrator tells us that the children, having permanently left the world of Earth behind, will now experience that:
“…the holidays have begun. The dream is ended: this is the morning… for them it was only the beginning of the real story. All their life in this world and all their adventures in Narnia had only been the cover and the title page: now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story which no one on earth has read: which goes on forever: in which every chapter is better than the one before.” (C.S. Lewis, The Last Battle)
Archetypes are true originals that become well-known symbols in literature, art or every-day life. In his writings, Lewis notes that our perception of these ‘archetypes’ are the hints of what ‘Really Real’ is like, breaking into our experience; love, justice, truth, beauty, for example. We only perceive hints of the full and complete Reality going on, all around us, but mostly beyond our human perception. Our perception of the ‘Really Real’ is only developed when we journey on in a deep relationship with the Creator God.
When we are born into this present world, we become locked in a world of 5 senses and 4 dimensions. We step into a time-line where the ‘Really Real’ is out there, beyond our human capabilities. However, through Redemption and the Life of God in us, we can begin to perceive and experience it.
The Scriptures are filled with Really-Real-breaking-in examples:
^^In 2Kings 2, Elisha has his perception rocked when he sees the cool ride God sent to pick up the prophet Elijah (in a whirlwind… “My father! The chariots and horsemen of Israel!”).
^^A few years later, there was a skirmish that arose between Elisha and Aram, a foreign king. Aram’s military surrounded Elisha’s camp, but Elisha was totally cooled out. His servant, all stressed that he would be dead in a few hours, complained to Elisha. Rather than a pep talk, Elisha prayed for the servant to see the ‘really real’ situation. Yikes! “Then the Lord opened opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha” (2Kings 6:17).
There are many accounts in Scripture… Isaiah, Ezekiel, John the Revelator…
God-Worship and Adoration opens us up to experience the Really Real, the Unseen World, and experience the very reality where God lives and breathes… and He invites us to come ‘further up and further in!’ with Him…
